FMI Podcast S1, E8: Roberto Napolitano - On Diversity, Marketing and the FinTech Landscape

In an insightful episode of the Financial Marketing Insights podcast, Roberto Napolitano, Chief Marketing Officer at Innovate Finance, shared his experiences and perspectives on the evolving fintech landscape in the UK. Innovate Finance, a pivotal membership association, plays a crucial role in connecting and advocating for fintech companies through events and policy initiatives.

The Role of Innovate Finance

Robert Napolitano is Chief Marketing Officer at Innovate Finance, dedicated to fostering growth in the fintech sector by connecting ecosystem players through various events and initiatives. The association amplifies success stories and advocates for fintech-friendly regulations. Roberto highlighted the importance of their flagship event, the Innovate Finance Global Summit (IFGS), held during UK FinTech Week at the Guildhall in London. This annual event draws thousands of decision-makers, including founders, CEOs, financial institutions, venture capitalists, government officials, and regulators, providing a platform to discuss trends, challenges, and opportunities.

“This is where 2000 to 3000 decision makers are coming to talk about new trends, challenges, opportunities - it’s a great opportunity to connect with the fintech ecosystem. This year we actually celebrated our 10th anniversary. So the 10th IFGS and it was a fantastic success. We already started the planning and the work for next year and we're very excited about it.”

Evolution and Challenges in Fintech

Reflecting on the past decade, Roberto discussed the significant transformation within the fintech industry. From startups to global organizations, the sector has matured considerably. The UK boasts the highest number of fintech unicorns and attracts more capital investment in fintech than all European countries combined. Despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and recent slowdowns in capital investment, fintech companies continue to innovate, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence, buy-now-pay-later solutions, cryptocurrencies, investment platforms, and web technologies. The agility and adaptability of fintech firms in responding to market shifts are noteworthy, with many startups and scale-ups demonstrating remarkable flexibility and problem-solving capabilities.

Common Needs Across Fintech Companies

Roberto identified several common needs among fintech founders and CEOs, regardless of their company's size or stage of development:

• Capital Access: From startups to high-growth firms, access to capital is crucial for scaling operations. Startups, in particular, require support in attracting and retaining talent, securing growth capital, and building brand awareness.

• Strategic Growth Support: Larger fintech companies, such as unicorns, focus on strategic growth aspects, including policy and regulation improvements, market choice for public offerings, and collaborations with other organizations.

• Problem-Solving and Innovation: Founders are typically innovative problem-solvers who launch new products or solutions based on their own experiences with specific issues. This personal connection to the problem often drives the development of impactful fintech solutions.

“Sometimes, it's one person, it's five people, 10 people in a team, and they don't have all the resources to go to market. So they need that support. And that's actually the segment of fintechs that inspire me the most. Because they're super agile. They're super flexible. They're always looking at how can they solve problems quickly.”

Commitment to Inclusion

Roberto emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusion in fintech, noting that it is essential for business growth. Innovate Finance has launched several initiatives to promote inclusion, such as the Pride in Fintech initiative and the Women in Fintech Power List. These initiatives celebrate and support the achievements of LGBTQ+ and female leaders in the fintech industry. Additionally, Innovate Finance works with organizations that support disabled customers, ensuring financial services are accessible to all. Roberto highlighted that over 20 million people in the UK live with disabilities, underscoring the need for inclusive financial services.

“So originally I'm Italian, but I've been living here for many years. I think the UK is one of the most advanced country in terms of using financial services solutions. And I know that eight out of 10 adults in the UK are using at least one fintech application. If you go back to Italy, I think that doesn't work because there's a lot less people using fintech. So I think we start from a privileged position in terms of our consumers are already using fintech for a long time, but now it's about including everyone, providing the access.”

Embracing Creativity and Trust

Roberto encouraged fintech companies to embrace uniqueness and creativity in their marketing strategies. While maintaining trust is paramount in financial services, he advocated for a balance between regulatory compliance and innovative, engaging marketing. He cited Monzo's campaigns as an example of effective, creative marketing that resonates with consumers while building trust.

The Future of Fintech

Innovate Finance continues to support fintech startups and scale-ups through initiatives like the FinTech Academy, designed to address the unique challenges faced by these companies. By providing resources and fostering a collaborative ecosystem, Innovate Finance helps fintech companies remain agile and innovative, ultimately contributing to the sector's growth and evolution.

“Our role is really to position the UK as the best country to start and scale a fintech business. And to start and scale a business that is successful, you need great talent. And great talent is talent that is of course skilled and they can deliver, but also a diverse talent pool because customers are diverse, so diversity is paramount.”

Roberto also highlighted the need for fintechs to constantly adapt to changing customer needs and behaviors, as well as the challenges posed by budget constraints. He emphasized the importance of understanding the 'why' behind a business and engaging in networking and conferences to gather diverse opinions and insights.

Inspiration and Creativity

Beyond work, Roberto draws inspiration from various forms of art, such as playing piano and reading literature, and enjoys spending time in nature and traveling. These activities, combined with interactions with creative and talented individuals, fuel his innovation and adaptability.

Roberto's insights underscore the dynamic nature of the fintech industry and the critical role of organizations like Innovate Finance in nurturing its development. As the sector continues to evolve, the commitment to innovation, problem-solving, and strategic growth remains at the forefront of fintech success.
